5 Positions and what it's all about!
Here are the 5 Positions that's the basic, from here you can go anywhere, with their help you'll never be all at sea. Life can be a lot easier, when you find out that there are only 5 chords on the guitar, to put it into a nutshell, you may also start with two Positions! All you need is a minimum in theory: first Notes on the fretboard and the basics about Major scales and their built-in halfsteps. Then you can take the first Steps. This is only a very brief explanation but it's supposed to be only an idea-starter anyway. So far it worked in my workshops and lessions, with just about every guitarplayer knowing the basics. The question is: What can be gained? Playing music should mean, that you know what you are doing, and you should be flexible, playing six notes per chord in a band is out, but on 3 strings it can be cool, and you're going to be called again! if you have a friend to play duos with it'll be more fun, when you're not doing the same and use a Capo you could be somewhere in the 5th or 7th fret only accentuating the ryhthm, there's even more like pentatonics and major-scales in those 5 positions. If you know a bit about chords and scales you could also play three major chords on three strings with one bassnote: in D-major that would be D, G, A if you tune down your E-string to D it can be great, but if you have an A in the bass it can be even more interesting (myxolydian), this can be heard in the middle 8 in my song Point Of No Return , by the way...
